Alabama: passed a bill to protect confederate monuments in May 2017.
Alaska: passed a bill that requires police officers to undergo training about sexual assault and test all untested rape kits every year in June 2018.
Arizona: passed a bill that bans background checks on the private sale of firearms in May 2017.
Arkansas: banned the safest method of second-trimester abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest in January 2017.
California: passed a bill to automatically pre-register 16 and 17 year olds to vote when they get their driver’s license or ID card in March 2018.
Colorado: enacted a law that people convicted of domestic violence and stalking charges cannot be released on bail between conviction and sentencing in May 2017.
Connecticut: expanded health benefits to include well-woman visits, contraception, STI screenings, and cancer screenings with no copay in May 2018.
Delaware: required that feminine hygiene products be provided for free to people in correctional facilities and child services in September 2018.
Florida: allowed trained employees to carry guns in K-12 schools in May 2018.
Georgia: decided that it would cut off state funding to public colleges that deem themselves “sanctuary campuses” in April 2017.
Hawaii: committed to generating 100% of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2045 in June 2015.
Idaho: no longer requires permits to carry a concealed weapon as of July 2016.
Illinois: enacted a law that mandates cosmetologists be trained to recognize signs of domestic violence in January 2017.
Indiana: mandated that first-time opioid prescriptions are limited to a 7-day supply in July 2017.
Iowa: passed a sweeping bill in March 2018 expanding suicide prevention training for school employees. (Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15-34 year olds in Iowa.)
Kansas: passed a bill in July 2018 requiring lobbyists attempting to influence the executive and judicial branches of government in have to disclose how much they spend on gifts for officials.
Kentucky: passed a bill in April 2018 that requires high school students to pass a financial literacy course before graduating.
Louisiana: shortened sentences for nonviolent criminals, and made it easier for people with drug convictions to get addiction treatment instead of jail time in June 2017.
Maine: legalized recreational marijuana in January 2017.
Maryland: passed legislation in April 2018 expanding the state’s medical marijuana industry and assuring that minority-owned companies are prioritized in receiving licenses for cannabis sales.
Massachusetts: passed a bill in October 2016 that requires that evidence in sexual assault cases be preserved for a minimum of 15 years instead of 6 months.
Michigan: required the department of corrections to provide special support in rehabilitating 18-22 year old offenders in June 2017.
Minnesota: made it illegal to distribute private sexual images without consent in May 2016.
Mississippi: expanded the list of ways to legally execute prisoners in April 2017.
Missouri: enacted a law in August 2017 that made it more difficult to claim discrimination and capped damages a guilty employer would be required to pay.
Montana: passed a bill in April 2017 allowing Native American students to wear traditional regalia at graduation ceremonies and prevents schools and government agencies from interfering with students who wish to wear items of cultural significance.
Nebraska: passed a law in March 2017 allowing public school teachers to wear habits, hijabs, and other religious clothing in their classrooms, ending a 98-year-old ban on religious garb that had been enacted under pressure from the Ku Klux Klan.
Nevada: passed a law that voting rights would be restored to some felons in June 2017.
New Hampshire: passed a law keeping schools from requiring or even requesting passwords or access to any student's social media accounts in July 2017.
New Jersey: passed a law in July 2017 that prohibits public schools from forcing transgender students to use bathrooms or locker rooms that conflict with their gender identity, and that “reasonable alternative arrangements” must be made to ensure a student’s safety and comfort.
New Mexico: enacted a law in March 2017 allowing 17 year olds who will be 18 by the time of the general election to vote in the primary.
New York: passed legislation in July 2017 exempting feminine hygiene products from sales and use taxes.
North Carolina: passed a law in March 2016 requiring that individuals only use bathrooms that correspond to the sex identified on their birth certificates in government buildings, such as public schools.
North Dakota: prohibited the personal use of campaign contributions and required the reporting of campaigns expenses in January 2018.
Ohio: instituted assisted suicide as a third degree felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison, in December 2016.
Oklahoma: passed a law in November 2017 that eliminated lack of knowledge of a victim’s age from being a legal defense to human trafficking of a minor.
Oregon: passed a law in March 2018 to automatically register all eligible voters unless they opt out.
Pennsylvania: outlawed firearm possession for individuals convicted of domestic violence in October 2018.
Rhode Island: banned bump stocks in February 2018.
South Carolina: passed a law allowing faith-based adoption agencies to turn away LGBTQ+ parents in July 2018.
South Dakota: increased the penalty for performing an abortion at 20 weeks of pregnancy and beyond from a misdemeanor to a felony in July 2017.
Texas: enacted a bill that limits insurance coverage for abortion procedures in August 2017.
Utah: made breastfeeding in public legal in May 2018.
Vermont pushed back against the FCC’s net neutrality rollback and passed a law to require internet service providers who do business with the state to abide by net neutrality principles in June 2018.
Virginia: passed Medicaid expansion in May 2018 after four years of blocks by a Republican supermajority in the Senate, extending healthcare coverage to 400,000 Virginians.
Washington: banned gay conversion therapy in March 2018.
West Virginia: criminalized revenge porn in April 2017.
Wisconsin: limited abortion coverage for public workers in April 2018.
Wyoming: passed a bill in March 2018 that increases patient protections from predatory doctors and sexual misconduct.
